2004 Microsoft Word for Mac Disaster

What a disaster the 2004 Microsoft Office for Mac has been. When I'm working on projects, the program is unstable. A link pops up that shows "too many files are open and must be closed" appears and totally disables the program. Whatever I'm working on, the content that wasn't saved is lost. It really sets me back because I have to utilize good time management to complete projects.

Last night, the Word started to act up. Whenever I typed, the words were not registering. After typing a full sentence, the words started to slowly appear. I was within a reference away from submitting the work. Word made the computer screen look as it was going haywire. I was very frustrated with process. My Apple is always dependable.

For some reason Word crashed the Apple. The screen looked like a mess. The bottom scroll bar shifted on top of the screen and multiplied. I had to hold down the power button for 5 seconds to shut th computer down. I thought that waiting would repair the system. I didn't want to shut it down because I was not sure if the paper was properly saved. With the AC plug having problems and an unstable Microsoft Word program, things are just not going right again.

The Apple Powerbook AC Plug Dilemma

The last few days, my Apple AC lug stopped working properly. The plug needs to be positioned a certain way or it will fail to charge the computer. Since I have to write a lot, I have to find a plug that works, which is frustrating because the holiday weekend is nearby and the mail system is going to be busy.

Ebay has a few good Apple AC Adapters. As for compatability, a couple dozen Apple models are on the list. My processor speed is not one of them. Is it one of those situation where everything goes wrong at the worst possible time? I sure think that has been the case for the past decade.

Well, hopefully I find a dependable plug because my I need to complete a ton of work.

Sovereign Immunity and Constitutional Law

Sovereign Immunity Concept

According to Cooper (2007), sovereign immunity concept was derived from England. In analyzing the concept, it is suggested that the highest power – the King – represents the sovereign figure that makes decisions to serve the people, but is protected under immunity, if in fact, he under performs or demonstrates poor decision-making abilities. Sovereign immunity prevents the King from imprisonment for jeopardizing a region due to his ineffective performance.

The President of the United States assumes a major role in decision making, as they must help formulate the annual budget, had executive control over the military and maintains the highest position in the American government. President Bush elected to engage into the Iraq War on the predetermined notion that Saddam Hussein maintained Weapons of Mass Destruction. After millions of Iraq soldiers and citizens, and over 4000 American soldiers were killed in combat, President Bush is not going to be sued by the families of the troops. Military members are not permitted to sue the Armed Forces unless there is obvious negligence, but the court avoids such cases. Constitutional violations in employment discrimination cases and the 5th amendment violation in the Eldridge disability case go beyond sovereign immunity. When President Nixon engaged into illegal wiretapping and information breech in Watergate, he broke ethical and government laws from hiding evidence, which would’ve incriminated him. Politicians are expected to make mistakes. They are protected from outside lawsuits.

Sovereign Immunity in U.S. Constitution

An actual amendment stating sovereign immunity protection doesn’t exist within the U.S. Constitution. According to Cooper (2007) the Eleventh Amendment states:

The judicial power of the United States shall be condensed to extend to any suit in law or equity, commenced or prosecuted against on the United States by Citizens of another State or by Citizens or Subjects of an Foreign State” (534).

The 11th Amendment basically provides that states are exempt from lawsuits from people and other coordinating states. States are given a high level of responsibility in ensuring efficiency. If a governor acts in the best interest of the state, they should not experience any legal backlash for adverse results.

Sovereign immunity exclusions should be written into the Constitution. While the people believe that government entities should be sued for their actions, the risk of public service is highly controversial and weighed heavily in the public forum. When a public entity acts in the best interest of the people, the agency and in respecting the U.S. Constitution, they should be protected from adverse results. Presidents are judged for their poor decision-making and leadership, and not confronted with lawsuits that hold them accountable for their mistakes.

Executive politics is a complex position that demands a great deal of resources. Senate and Congress shouldn’t be sued for voting on an issue that damages the quality on a group, city and environment. Although there should be governmental protection, there is also reason to believe that unethical and illegal activity should be excluded from sovereign immunity. If President Bush knowingly entered the Iraq War on the presumption that he wanted to take over a country for no apparent reason, then he would be confronted for abusing his authority.

Out of 43 U.S. Presidents, there is no clear evidence that proves that a President acted illegally to endanger Americans. A perfect example challenges the mere perception of sharing confidential classified information for monetary value. The Iran Contra Arms Deal in the 80’s shifted legal responsibility to Lt. Col North while the main culprit could’ve been President Reagan. Enacting a sovereign immunity law would allow governmental officials to break the law and not worry about the consequences. Changing the 13th amendment would enable states to sue, as well as other citizens to submit lawsuits on the grounds of poor state decision-making that jeopardized their families and their quality of life. Tobacco companies were not protected, and were sued for billions, considering that it was the victim’s decision to smoke cigarettes. Sovereign immunity is a controversial subject that policymakers should continue to support, but should remain in effect to protect from impending lawsuits due to poor governmental decision-making

Constitutional Law Final Exam Graduate Paper on Policies

Policy Formulation

(1) The Democratic Party had just secured the last piece of the policymaking puzzle with President-elect Barack Obama. With a majority in both Houses and President-elect Obama awaiting inauguration, the Democrats hold the key to future change. President Clinton maintained an identical power shift as President-elect currently enjoy, but during his attempt – mid 90’s - to push universal healthcare, the legislation never gained the expose it required to pass the House. Although the Democrats controlled both Houses, President Clinton’s party members failed to support universal healthcare for its funding and excessive political intervention. In retrospect, the healthcare industry and the federal government knew they made a mistake by not supporting universal healthcare.

In order to repair the economy, Congress and President-elect Obama must work together to reform current government programs. The economy is going to require delicate and immediate attention to rebound from its current slump. President-elect is searching for an efficient strategy in confronting the economy through devising energy and healthcare reform bills. In 1996, President Clinton pushed welfare reform to save on federal government costs and to implement policy changes and requirements. President-elect Obama and Congress will play an important role in policy formulation. According to Cooper (2007), policy formulation is “before designing specific responses to a problem decision must be made as to what type of policy is to be employed” (359). Although Congress assumes decisive control in the policymaking,

President-elect Obama maintains veto power, but it unlikely to exhaust it with a Democratic House and Senate majority impending his inauguration. For the course of this question, policy formulation will serve as the central focus in confronting the economy.

Regulatory policy

Policy formulation confronts regulatory policy, distributive policy, redistributive, capitalization and ethical policies. According to Cooper (2007),“regulatory programs place limits on various forms of activity” (359). Congress may employ regulatory policy to regulate agencies to adopt universal healthcare. As healthcare costs continue to rise, with no end in sight, a healthcare legislation will be introduced – universal healthcare coverage – to enforce lawful standards and practices. Congress may use regulatory policy to regulate the Detroit’s Big Three automakers and the Wall Street Stock Market. Because of risky lending, faulty decision-making and unethical practices, these industries managed to self-destruct the economy. Congress will place limits on various aspects of a program, employment and public practices, influence the licensure process, and monitor change using a combination of governmental agencies.

Distributive policy

According to Cooper (2007), “Distributive policies grant goods and services to specify segments of the population” (360). Welfare, Veterans, Medicare, Medicaid, and possible universal healthcare legislation's confront distributive policies.

As a Veteran and former service member of the United States Air Force, distributive policy is easily understood. When applying for VA healthcare insurance, the administrator asks a series of medical and financial questions. The main goal is to qualify a member using a scale system. If a Veteran member earns less than $20,000 per year, they receive free healthcare benefits excluding dental. Financial data influences whether a Veteran receives free healthcare or must pay for healthcare services. Medicare provides healthcare for elderly clients over the age of 65.

Redistributive policy

According to Cooper (2007), redistributive policy is “aimed at rearranging one or more of the basic schedules of social and economic rewards” (360). Redistributive policy Welfare uses a similar scale to qualify members. Income status is critical in qualify members for benefits. Medicaid provides healthcare for the poor. President Johnson introduced a series of legislation that confronted poverty through introducing Medicaid healthcare insurance for the poor.

President Clinton influenced welfare reform to remedy the detrimental problems due to program policies requiring caps on benefits and work guidelines (clients must seek employment and work a set amount of hours to maintain benefits). Redistributive policy confronts with Congress legislation reforming currently program such as welfare. Congress will most likely use redistributive policies to enact universal healthcare. Passing legislation on universal healthcare will improve the overall state of the healthcare system through using tax measures from the rich to provide healthcare for the uninsured. Because the uninsured drive the per capita cost of healthcare cost through the roof, they also factor into the poor quality of care rendered to patients by Americans physicians, which ranks 37th in the world. Congress will rearrange healthcare with universal healthcare policies.

Capitalization policy

Capitalization policies “provide subsidies, tax credits, tax abatements, contracts, or grants to aid in capital formation” (360). Globalization influenced American businesses to relocate and outsource their businesses to foreign countries. The main goal was to save on overhead – employee, taxes and benefits. Congress may introduce capitalization policies to influence American businesses to stay within American borders and possibly provide incentives to boost the economy. DHL already ceased business in domestic mail services, which severely impacted workers in Wilmington, Ohio. Due to competition and major losses, the mail carrier stopped its domestic services to restructure its company objective. Capitalization policies allow Congress to assist private sector companies with expanding within domestic borders (Cooper, 2007). Private sector companies will be given incentives to help boost the economy.

Ethical Policies

According to Cooper (2007), “the Ethics in Government Act was designed to encourage public servants to note and act to avoid possible conflicts of interest, and attempts to promote public support for civil servants by publicizing their efforts to prevent unethical practices” (360). Basically, ethical policies are headed by executive orders and passed by Congress to encourage and boost awareness, but doesn’t mandate any law or ethical policies. The key word is encouraging an agency and not using coercion to enforce administrative laws. Congress and President-elect Obama may use ethical policies to promote energy and environmental changes. Through influencing energy by ethical policies, the economy would enjoy positive success.

Congress will employ redistributive, regulatory, and capitalization policy to boost the economy. Many of the violation, outsourcing and program require government intervention to stimulate the economy. In order to repair the economy, Congress must write legislation to monitor, regulate and supervise the problem that affected the economy.

Question 2

(2) According to Cooper (2007), “The problem with the lack of discretion based on a view of government as rife with fraud abuse and waste is that it produces poor customer service” (322). The preceding statement confronts public service entities that follow the rules as robots. They don’t provide the efficient customer service necessary to be successful. The government is in the business of extending service to the public. Public service is more than about following the internal framework of public and administrative laws. In modeling an entrepreneurial approach, “the government ought to make constructive use of the dynamic of the marketplace to achieve better performance and greater efficiency” (Cooper, 2007, p. 322). Public service entities must be given the freedom to utilize competition restraints between the private sector and in government agencies. According to Cooper (2007), the following confronts the marketplace:

- First, it argues that there needs to be sufficient flexibility in how modes of implementation and service delivery are selected to take advantage of competition, both among units of government and between government and private sector organizations.
- Second, in order to compete, public managers must have sufficient flexibility to innovate for greater efficiency and effectiveness and in order to make rapid changes in response to evolving market trends
- The expanded use of contracting out of services and program management is related to the market dynamic (322).

Privatization of prisons and jails support the use of the private marketplace to extend government services. President Clinton made good use of private agencies to expand government. Allowing the private sector to assume customary government roles and duties by reducing costs, improving customer service and providing staff flexibility.

Cooper (2007) noted that many foreign countries are adopting American government processes. The staple of American government coordinates with the traditional British government. The legal and political ideology confronts the use of “market-oriented conception” and confronts the following:

- First, there is a simple assumption that cost is a critical component
- Responsible public action requires a positive cost/benefit calculation
- Third, there are performance standards
- Fourth, there is often an effort to define the responsibility in terms of customer satisfaction (Cooper, 2007, p. 557).

If the government would adopt the market-oriented conception, they would improve on their customer service and potentially save on cost. Cooper (2007) noted, “the market approach ignores the fact that people have legal rights and legislation imposes legally enforceable obligation on administrators and their agencies” (557). In federal agencies, employees retain Title VII discrimination rights, follow federal and administrative laws and retain constitutional rights. Although market-oriented conception lacks legal and legislation protection, it builds on customer satisfaction.
Personal Perception

Personally, the culture of entrepreneurship would improve the government. The government is too big to restrict its services and responsibilities. Privatizing government service would save on cost, provide customer satisfaction and allow the government to concentration on other impending programs. Other the other side of the argument, privatized members tends to lack respect for constitutional rights, which places the government in a tough situation. The government should balance out the agencies, but not completely shift all responsibilities, as legislative and administrative laws require government workers to implement and respect the laws.

(3) The law does make providing public service a complex process. Public administrator find it troublesome to serve the public, but struggling in doing so because of strict adherence to administrative, public and constitutional laws. There are too many legal restraints that make public service entities appear like machines. The court and law are written to protect employees from experiencing discrimination, and receiving unfair and unequal treatment in the workforce. There are an excessive amount of regulations that prevent public representatives from serving the public. They have to avoid making mistakes that will cause them court conflict.

According to Cooper (2007), no entity is willing to challenge law and make reference to adopting legislative policies as the sole problem of public service. The government is too uniformed to provide quality service. The legal debate prevents public entities from making formal decisions. Cooper (2007) the following as myths:

- Myth 1: Law is an Obstacle and the Courts are making it more so
- Myth 2: Deregulation and Privatization will put an end to judicial interference in
Officials’ Lives
- Myth 3: Law is the Problem and New Public Management is the Solution
- Myth 4- If We Could Just Design the Right Policies, There Wouldn’t Be A Problem (569-571).

Myth 1 allows the court to determine what is right and what they think is wrong. There is a great deal of pressure to model the law, but it is too rigid. Myth 2 claims deregulation and privatization will end judicial, but it will misrepresent the government. Private entities don’t contain the same respect for the law as government employees. Myth 3 confronts law as the problem, which is overwhelmingly true because of traditional Supreme Court practices that prevent modernity practices. Myth 4 attempts to resolve a problem that is impossible and unlikely. No group will ever agree on one policy. There are not right or wrong policies. The government may determine policies, but sometimes they don’t believe in them. In respecting the law, one must possess more flexibility to engage in decision-making. Overall, the government needs to focus on customer satisfaction, but still respect the law. Laws prevent the instance of discrimination and other practices that still occur in the workplace.

The Truth behind Dreams

Do you remember what you dreamed about the night before? Most people have a vague memory. In order to locate the connection between your life and that of your dreams, you should try to keep a log about what you dream about. Having a waking problem is sure to materialize into something different in the dream world. There are many book about dreams.

Barnes & Nobles has a good selection of dream books, ones that help to decode your dreams. They have a dream dictionary that is useful for determining why you may be experiencing recurring dreams. Nightmares are not always what they seem. While it seems like they play on our fears, they are actually a clue to what problems we may be facing in the waking world.

Have you ever had a dream about the devil? A dream about watching yourself die? Having these type of dreams is hinting at other problems in your life. The devil dream signifies evil in your life. Not the kind of evil that will possess you, but actually a hint of your life struggles.

The devil dream could be telling you that your significant other is not right for you; that is only true if you have recurring fights and are unhappy about your relationship. Pay attention to your dreams and try to make the connection to your real problems.

Dreams are just as usual as a psychologist. Instead of spending thousands on therapy, you could use your dreams to help you heal. Dreams don't always have a relational meaning - the waking and dreaming world.

Dreaming of death doesn't necessarily mean you will die. Look for certain symbols in your dreams. A staircase, examination, and toilet all have some direct meaning that is completely opposite of what you perceive them to be. Dreaming about a deceased family member suggests they are trying to sooth your soul. They know that you are still thinking about them and want to help you to accept their passing.

Dreaming about an examination signifies a goal. When time is involved, it suggest that you have time limit on your goals. Other people in that dream are ones that are trying or have direct control with you accomplishing the goal.

The next time you have a dream, pay attention. If you want answers, ask for them before you sleep. More than often, you will discovers them. Try to keep logs of your dreams to treat any waking life problems. Dreaming is a part of life. Try to use your dreams to stay a step ahead of your problems.

The next time you sleep, don't be afraid that the death dream the night before will cause you a heart attack this time around. Allow your mind to dream, but look for the clues that will help you decode your problems.

Psychology and Christianity

Yesterday evening, I wrote a 4 Mat book review on Psychology and Christianity. Anytime I write about psychology, my mind becomes fatigued. Creative and film writing sooth your mind. Anything relating to psychology places a great deal of strain on the mind.

The next time you write something that relates to psychology, make sure you read, outline, and complete the work earlier. Avoid procrastinating on psychology assignment because your mind will pay the price. When your mind struggles, you will feel the pressure, possibly leading to anxiety, stress, and negative feelings.

We tend to evaluate academic work as something that is boring. Even interesting assignments can be somewhat deflating too. Don't be tricked into thinking that you will complete interesting assignment early. The main problem is writing, as many think of it as an obstacle.

Planning the work ahead of time is not going to solve your writing issues. Focus on why you dislike writing. There is always an internal reason for procrastinating on assignments. When we wake up each morning, we brush our teeth, take a shower, and eat. If we are able to do those activities, then we can train our mind to accept writing too. Reading and writing helps a person become more acquainted with their perceptual abilities.

While reading about psychology and Christianity, it made me think about how both areas are interrelated and also conflicting. People assume that a psychologists can't practice both psychology and Christianity at the same time. There is confusing in mass Christian belief.

A person can practice both concentrations through separating their personal and professional views. Writing and reading psychology and religious content doesn't also nuke the mind. Give yourself a chance to process other beliefs, which will help to develop a cognitive perception.

Instead of judging and being critical about others, maybe you will try help others to make the world a better place. Don't think of what others are doing. Just think that you one more helping hand is going to make a difference. The book was very interesting and is applicable to the struggles in society. Find out what others are complaining about and do those things.

Michael Jackson 1958-2009

1958-2009

Michael Jackson passed away at 2:26 PM PST on June 25, 2009 in UCLA Medical Center. Fox quoted Michael Jackson as "the most famous man on the planet Earth."

Thank you Michael Jackson for inspiring us. I remembered break dancing to "Beat It" in the early 80's. You were there when I grew up.

You are more than just an icon; you were the ambassador of peace.

My middle brother woke me and said that FM 106.1 KMEL confirmed Michael Jackson dead at 2:26 PM PST. I was in shock. It was like one of those moments where you just wake up and feel like you're still sleeping - a surreal kind of moment.

This morning, my little brother was playing 'Beat It." He told me that Michael Jackson would always be the best. He talked as if he had already passed. He was the one that called and confirmed Fox's announcement of Michael Jackson's passing.

My little brother told me that he had one of his funny feelings this morning. You usually senses things, but he doesn't consider himself to be a psychic or one that make predictions. We listened to Michael Jackson's music for the last time - of course while Jackson will still alive. Michael Jackson's awesome performances and music will continue to be a part of the present and the future.

May you live in peace and continue to be an inspiration to the world. Everyone was waiting for you to perform in London. Now you will be performing in the hearts of your fans.

There are not enough words to say how great you were and will always be. May the Jackson family make it through the tough times.

Micahel Jackson will always inspire people. You were a rare talent and a humble person that can't never be replaced.

RIP Michael Jackson

The Threat of Nuclear Destruction

The Obama Administration have their hands full. North Korea is a potential nuclear threat due to their recent skirmish with launching test missiles. They disobeyed warning signs from the United States and the United Nations.

The State Department needs to diffuse the threat before further conflict starts another war. The use of coercion is imminent to treat the problem. Though President Obama wanted to adopt diplomacy, the North Korean issue is becoming worse. America has to be more serious about handling the nuclear threat.

Prevent a nation from launching missiles - ones that pose a nuclear threat - could be done using a trade embargo, the type that would cripple their economy.

We cannot afford to take any risks. The American government must find a way to neutralize the threat to prevent further conflict. The U.S. military is already dealing with two wars due to terrorism. Another war versus a nuclear power increases the risk of a World War.

The threat is always there. Confronting the problem now to preserve the future is better than waiting for the threat to materialize into a catastrophic war. We have no choice but to worry.

Hopefully the threat of nuclear destruction stays inside films and away from reality.

Since January 20, 2009, the Obama Administration has taken on many challenges. While the economy has rattled American businesses, the federal government must be more alert about North Korea's nuclear tests . If nuclear weapons are used, the future as we know it will cease to exist.

Nuclear weapons can never be used anywhere on Earth. The media continues to report on North Korea as a nuclear threat. Recently, President Obama and South Korea communicated their nuclear concerns, which North Korea took as a potential threat.

Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM's) are able to travel for thousands of miles. Originally, the Soviet Union developed the missiles to keep pace in the Cold War. ICBM's could reach as far as 3500 miles away, which puts Hawaii at risk.

North Korea has stated that their launch was to set a satellite into orbit. Launching nuclear missiles violate the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of 1963.

Atomic and hydrogen bombs were the worst inventions of the 20th Century. What we need to do is to keep nuclear weapons away from irresponsible nations. Though, it seems as if the United States is unable to prevent some nations from deploying nuclear weapons.

Pakistan and India both have nuclear weapons as a determent from one another, which neutralizes any outside threats.

Having access to nuclear weapons is also known as international prestige. Nations that have nuclear weapons are taken more seriously than others.

The United Nations monitors countries to keep nuclear information and weapons away from extremists and other nations that want to abuse their power.

People need to work together to confront climate control. We have to preserve our future. Preventing nuclear destruction is a priority. Ignoring the threat is not an option.

President Obama has responded to the North Korean threat and mentioned that its something that is not taken lightly. Thermonuclear destruction has been on the minds of people since the creation of the hydrogen bomb.

In the 1950', comic books and magazines used to feature many covers and stories focusing on atomic bombs. The atomic bombs that were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima were measured in 16 and 21 kilotons.

When hydrogen bombs were created, the most powerful one produced an explosion measuring 150 megatons. The power of the strongest bomb is unimaginable.

The world needs to focus on preserving the planet instead of killing it off. The threat of nuclear destruction is realistic.

While the American infrastructure is struggling to recover from a near economic collapse, the two wars still continue to linger on. America can't handle another outside threat, especially ones that involve nuclear weapons.

If we fail to realize the threat of nuclear destruction, all of mankind will be lost.

Why should you be open minded about applying to college

Five years ago, I applied to four colleges: UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, and UCSC. At that very moment, I wanted to attend UCLA more than any other college. UCLA's Film School was a dream like Stansford was for Sean in the Orange Couty film.

When it comes to college, you have take a chance in life. I was only accepted to UCSB and UCSC. UCLA was eliminated from the list. Should I have waited another year for UCLA or would it be wise to take a chance on one of the two colleges that accepted me? Time was not on my side. I wanted to finish school and go after a possible film career.

I already gave up on an Air Force career as a medical technician. Before joining the military, my main goal has always been the same - I wanted a career in Hollywood. Though, I wanted to be an actor, I compromised to be a writer, which I enjoyed and believed was more inspiring than acting.

Maybe I will have a chance to be an actor one day. Dreams never go as planned, but if you stick to them, anything is possible. I figured out that all my struggles helped me to become a better writer.

Think about it; the best stories have a ton of conflict, making the characters fight for what they want out of life. UC Santa Barbara would help me to take one step closer to starting a carrer in the film industry.

When I was accepted to two California universities, I had to make a pro and cons list. I already lived within 40 miles of UC Santa Cruz. I would be a part of the Digital Film & Media Program. At UC Santa Barbara, I was accepted in the Dramatic Arts Program. What decision was the best? I had to still consider what my fiance wanted as well.

After carefully analyzing the two colleges, I finally decided that I would attend UC Santa Barbara. We agreed that Southern California would be a part of our lives. I would also be closer to Hollywood, which I could take advantage of and possibly seek writing opportunities there.

I called the Film adviser at UC Santa Barbara and switched my major to Film Studies. The program was well rounded and covered the theory of film, television, and media. UCLA was always the first and only college that I wanted to transfer to, but I knew that if I waited for it, I risked not graduating altogether.

Five years after my decision, I graduated from UC Santa Barbara's Film & Media Program with a BA Degree. The college was near the beach, making the experience more awesome. I used to walk down State Street after night classes, the most famous street in Santa Barbara. Santa Barbara is one of those cities where you can relax and write. It's a writer's community.

I don't regret my decision to attend UC Santa Barbara. UCLA will always be one of those colleges that I wanted to attend. Maybe I can write a story about what it would have been like to attend UCLA.

Some students complain about their UCLA college experience while I would have enjoyed it no matter what obstacles were presented in front of me. Essentially, UCSB was a good college decision that will one day pay off, hopefully more sooner than later.

Be open minded about your college decison. You never know what valuable experiences that you will gain

Milipitas or Gilroy Walmart?

While driving on 87 North in San Jose, my fiance and I debated over which Walmart we should go to. I wanted to get an oil change at the Milipitas Walmart. She liked the Gilroy Walmart more. It was decided that we would go to the Gilroy Walmart.

The oil was last changed about 6,500 miles. There was little traffic on the 101 freeway. As we passed Morgan Hill, we were making good time to Gilroy.

Passing near San Martin, a few vehicles quickly moved out of the way. Out of nowhere, a large shovel sat right in the middle lane. There was no time to maneuver around the shovel. I had no choice but to roll over it.

The impact of the shovel smacked the bottom of the car. I thought nothing of it and continued to drive on the freeway. Gilroy was nearby. I still needed to get that oil change.

A few minutes from the exit, the oil light popped on. In the rear view mirror, there was a trail of oil. All of a sudden, the car started to run rough.

I drove as quick as I could to the Walmart Gilroy. The car made it to the parking lot. I quickly shut the car off. What I discovered was that the shovel sliced a clean cut across the oil pan, making the oil spill out.

Instead of getting an oil change to maintain the vehicle, now I had to deal with trying to fix a broken oil pan. My goal was to get an oil change and now I had a broken oil pan that would be unable to hold any oil.

I believe that the Milipitas Walmart was a better choice.

The British and the German Pilot

At a restaurant, I waited on a customer that served in World War II. He shared a story about a British and a German pilot.

During World World II, a British pilot tried to outrun a German pilot. The German pilot pulled in closer and switched to guns. He was unable to get a clear shot.

The British pilot slowed down, bringing the German pilot in closer. Eventually, the British pilot escaped the wrath of the German pilot through using the clouds.

One day, almost five to six decades later, a man talked about the story about the British pilot escaping the German pilot. Another person overheard and knew about this pilot.

The two pilots had indeed, survived the war. Later, the German and British pilot were reunited and became the best of friends. They still managed to compete against one another about the plane experience that took place over 60+ years ago.

The German pilot said that he had the British pilot; he was ready to shoot him down. The British pilot claimed he was too quick and skillful to be shot down.

World War II united two people that were once enemies.

Easy Cheese

Servers have to use different words to communicate with cooks. 86 means that the restaurant is out of an item. Easy is another word to suggest that you don't want too much of something.

When I served a table with a family, the mother ordered an omelet for her child; she wanted a little cheese. I jotted down the order. She heard me say easy cheese.

The mother said that she wanted little cheese. I confirmed the request with saying easy cheese. She said no easy cheese please, just little cheese. I eventually caught on and told her that easy cheese meant little cheese.

The mother told me that she thought I meant Easy Cheese. She said that her kids hated the Easy Cheese in the can. It's the kind of cheese one that comes in a whip cream looking spray bottle.

Due to the misunderstanding, we both hysterically laughed. The mother laughed to the to the point where she felt embarrassed. All the laughing made my ribs cramp up.

The easy reference made the lunch an enjoyable experience for a family. It gave me a laugh that helped me get through the busy lunch rush. Easy cheese does it again.

The Tasty Ribs

While working at a restaurant in Southern California, I served a table with a grandmother, grandson, and a granddaughter. The grandson ordered the kid's ribs.

I delivered the food to the table. The family started to eat. I checked on the other surrounding tables. From the distance, the grandson was tearing apart the ribs.

I visited the table to make sure everyone was doing well. I asked the grandson if he thought the ribs were tasty. When he heard the word tasty, he started to laugh and snorted like a pig. He continued to laugh out of control to the point where the grandmother had to discipline him.

After I left, I knew that I got the grandson in trouble. I told another coworker about using the word tasty. She laughed just like the grandson. She said, "Who uses the word tasty?"

The coworker compared the word to what a 70's pimp or a cheesy guy would use to hit on another girl. "Hey baby, you look tasty," is what she had in mind.

Adding tasty as an adjective to the ribs caused the grandson to get in trouble. The tasty reference caused another comedic moment.

The Flying Sandal

On my best friend's birthday, we all went out to Disneyland and a few other places. It was a rather hot day. My best friend just turned 30 years old. We walked around the crowded amusement park, rode rides, had breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and shopped in many of the stores.

Near the end of the night, we were trying to find the Peter Pan ride. Though I never mentioned it, I wanted to ride Space Mountain.

When I walked across the railroad tracks, the ones that were near the center of Disneyland, my sandal got stock stuck in the railing and broke apart. I sure wasn't happy about the situation.

Since we all planned to go to the Animal Park and then San Diego, I failed to pack any other shoes or sandals. Here I was trying to drag the other sandal and unable to maintain my balance, knowing that we wouldn't have time to stop by a store to purchase another.

Because of the broken sandal, I constantly tripped over my foot. Near the Alice in Wonderland ride, I got so fed up with the sandal, I kicked it off my foot. The sandal smacked a lady in the back of the head. As she held her head, she looked for the object that was responsible.

My best friend, his girlfriend, and my fiance started to laugh hysterically. It was the kind of laughing where one has to clutch their stomach to keep from cramping up. I slowly walked over and grabbed the sandal. The lady had no idea that she was hit on the head by a flying sandal.

Afterward, I had to buy a pair of Mickey Mouse flip flops. They were blue with white little Mickey Mouses all over them. I thought they would be temporary, but I had to wear them the entire weekend. The broken sandal taught me to bring an extra pair of shoes on trips, not taking a chance at another flying sandal experience.

The $400 Honda Disaster

Several years ago, I worked at a restaurant in Morgan Hill. After taking the bus for a few years, I decided to buy a car. I couldn't afford a new car or even a good used one.

A coworker wanted to sell her old 1982 Honda Accord for $400. It was a piece of junk, but I accepted it. She made arrangements to sell the car before she planned to purchase a used Hyundai. I decided to take a chance on this old junker. What I didn't know that I was in for a wild ride.

On the very day I picked up the car, she told me that the transmission failed, only the first two gears worked. Since this car was an automatic, the fastest that it could go was 40 miles per hour.

Only the D1 and D2 gears worked. I tried not to push the car because the engine had over 480,000 miles on it. Can you believe that a Honda could last that long?

This car made it to the end of its life. I would soon find that out in a few short weeks.

On a few occasions, I called the job to tell them that I would be a few minutes late due to my slow driving car. I noticed the car redlining the entire time; The engine struggled to maintain speed.

I couldn't drive the car on the freeway, otherwise the engine would have blown up. Each day, I had to drive on Monterey Highway. The speed limit was 50 MPH. i could only drive 40MPH.

I remembered the last time I drove the Honda. I tried to fix the car, but it needed way too much work. This car was far past its prime. I drove on Monterey Highway for the last time.

With each hard pressed mile, the engine started to struggle more and more. All of a sudden, the engine exploded, causing a blanket of black smoke to suffocate the surrounding air.

The visibility was so restricting, I hoped that no other cars were following behind. It wasn't safe to drive through the dark cloud.

The Honda was parked on the side of the road. Luckily I was close to the restaurant. I called my job. The bookkeeper, Tina, picked me up.

For the next week, the Honda was parked on the side of the road. I left a note on the dashboard concerning the matter. I wanted to make that the car wasn't towed away.

Each day I passed by the car, I hoped that it was there. When the police have cars towed, a person has to pay multiple fees. I didn't have enough money to pay for a tow.

One day, the car was gone. I had no clue where to look. After a few hours of calling around, I located the car. It was stored in a car junkyard in the middle of San Martin. I couldn't afford to pay for the tow and storage fees.

The storage facility agreed on a deal; they wanted me to pay for the tow fees and would accept the car as a replacement for the storage fees.

After work, I walked 5 miles to the storage facility. I signed over the title and paid the tow fee, all the money I made in tips that day was used to free me of the car problems.

I hadn't gone to DMV to accept ownership for the vehicle yet. To be fair and honest, I didn't want to cause the coworker any problems.

Six months later, the coworker that sold me the car experienced some misfortune of her own. Her transmission had blown out.

Ironic, considering that she knew that the Honda transmission was not in good working order and now she had the same exact thing happen to her.

The $400 Honda disaster was a learning lesson. Don't buy cars that are ready for dismantling. Whenever your car breaks down, make sure you tow it right away.

Other then that, the $400 Honda was a short lived purchase that only sparked one memory - the black cloud of smoke that consumed the road and my life.

The Right Place at the Wrong Time

Have you ever heard about being at the wrong place at the wrong time or being at the right place at the right time? I'm sure people feel like that way all the time. Imagine if you were at the right place at the wrong time. How about being at the right place at the wrong time twice or maybe even three time in one night.

This past January, I had dinner at Tony Roma's in Encino. I sat in the last booth near the bar. I tend to have dinner alone, especially when my lady is not around. Some assume that men are unable to go out and just have dinner without talking to another woman. Everyone needs a moment to digest the challenges of life; to rejuvenate and be ready for more obstacles.

The restaurant was busier than usual. Some nights appear like that. People need some time to reflect on their jobs, personal lives, and whatever else excites or stresses them out. The server was very busy as it was apparent that was juggling a dozen tables at one time. She passed by a few times and mentioned that she would be back in a few minutes. It felt like one of those déjà vu moments. She managed to pass by three times and say the same thing.

I was starving, not starving in the sense that I don't eat often, but I was extremely hungry. I usually visit Tony Roma’s for one reason, to eat their famous ribs. The server finally came back. I didn't need to contemplate on what to order. The dish was programmed into my mind like Microsoft Vista. Though, my mind was more stable and processed information better.

I ordered the bountiful beef ribs, which I might add are the best ribs there or anywhere else on the planet. I have tried ribs at many restaurants, and nothing compared to Tony Roma's beef ribs. Chili's has good pork ribs, but beef is my favorite kind of ribs. I decided that I would have an appetizer this time around.

Normally I focus on the beef ribs. The boneless buffalo strips just leaped out at me as if they were begging to be ordered. Not to sound crazy or anything, but food tends to communicate to you when you're extremely hungry.

I didn't hold back at all. I ordered the beef ribs, a salad, an appetizer, and a Sam Adams beer. The Sam Adams beer was exactly the one that I had on another trip the previous year. It was some type of Sam Adams wheat beer on draft - a seasonal one, but they may still have it there now.

The beer went down as smooth as any other. I tend to drink the Jeremiah Red beer at BJ's too. Whenever I go to restaurants, I have my favorites. With the economy, everyone must be financially responsible, especially with eating out and taking trips.

I'm not one of those people that drink until I get drunk. I like to enjoy a good drink one in a while. Sometimes I may go a year without having a beer. You wouldn't label me as a social drinker because I also drink Coke and Rock Star energy drinks.

To the right of me, I noticed two women dressed in business clothing. I zeroed in on what they were talking about. I know the formal name that I was trying to disclose was eves dropping.

Besides, I just heard something interesting about film, writing, and Disney. Those three trigger words took my mind out of sleep mode. Here I was, drinking a Sam Adams beer, waiting on a soon-to-be-tasty platter of beef ribs. The ribs were no longer the center of attention.

What were these women were talking about that attracted my attention? A number of their stories came up about a script, writing, Disney, Ron Howard, Michael Eisner, and so on. These were classy women that just radiated of executive power. They were sitting at the bar, enjoying a few glasses of wine and other drinks. They downloaded information about their future projects and just relaxed, and enjoyed the moment.

For any inspiring writer, this was a dream. How often do you have a chance to sit in the same space as the people that have the power to make your dreams a reality? I have lived 20 miles North of Hollywood for the past 4 years.

At times, I may see a few Hollywood stars walking around, trying to enjoy their time away from work. You know the drill; celebrities have to hide from the paparazzi. They complain about the irritating flashes from high-powered cameras. I want what these celebrities complain about. I have also wanted to work in Hollywood. Every decision that I made in the past 15 years is due to my dream.

The boneless buffalo strips were delivered. I declined to have another beer because driving under the influence is not safe. I am always responsible, especially when it comes to safety. I still couldn’t believe my ears.

For the past 18 months, since I graduated from UC Santa Barbara's Film & Media Studies undergraduate program, I have been writing academic papers for many students. I have helped other become successful. Many people can't pinpoint the exact moment they started a job or came up with an idea.

I remembered taking on a business project, one that requested me to create a website name. I decided to use Magic Writer. Since the website was already picked up by another, I settled with Writers Magician. I did visit the Magic Writer website to see what it was all about. There were a few writing companies on there. I found one that seemed cool. The link directed me to a site that catered to students and other professional clients that needed work produced. I applied and was accepted the next day. 18 months later, I have written thousands of pages for many diverse clients.

I ate half of the buffalo strips. The Sam Adams beer functioned like a glass of wine. After every bite, I washed down the strips with the beer - each bite was better than the next. Initially, I still focused on what these women were discussing. The midpoint, character development, and the setting all surfaced in the conversation. The server passed by and alerted me that the ribs would be ready soon. I nodded in agreement, but it was the writing conversation that had my direct attention.

The two film executives enjoyed their conversation. They had enjoying laughs, ones that were real and full of zest. I wanted to interact with these women about film. I understood everything they were talking about.

As mentioned earlier, every decision that I made in the past 15 years revolved around this moment. The hundreds of college film classes, degrees, reading writing books, talking to people, taking on film projects, and everything else that has to do with film prepared me. The beef ribs finally arrived. They were everything I expected, but the women were more.

There were only six ribs on the plate. Honestly, I have a really good memory. I knew they had removed one ribs. Seven ribs was the norm for the platter. When the server dropped off a few napkins, I asked about the ribs. She mentioned that my assumptions were right; the restaurant decided to remove one ribs from the platter. Not many people noticed that a rib was missing. I was still drawn to the ribs and the conversation. I only ate half of the ribs.

I tried to figure out was I should say to these women. I replayed the confrontation in my mind, over and over again. I treated the moment like a setup to a screenplay - Act I. I pulled out a receipt and wrote on it. On the paper, I communicated that these women inspired me and that I really enjoyed their conversation. I didn't want to make it look as if I was some stalker. I just wanted to thank them for inspiring me. I looked through my wallet, searching for the business cards that I usually kept in the money section.

Before I left, I had the business cards in my hand. It was like I sensed would need them, but I managed to leave them at home. People do that often. They never learn or even follow their instincts. I planned to send the cards to my brother to attract writing business.

I asked the server for a take out box. To me, I knew that I was in the right spot at the wrong time. The business card issue made me realize that whenever a person speaks to a film executive, they had to be ready. The business card was going to ruin what dreams that I made for the past two decades. Instead of being happy about being in the right spot, I now focused about the wrong time.

The bartender was cleaning the counter. When I signaled to her, she walked over. She was very friendly. I told her that I wanted to buy a glass of wine for one of the ladies. The bartender told me that the lady already had one glass too many to drink. She suggested that I go up to the ladies and talk to them. The bartender shared that one of the ladies happened to be Cindy Williams. This was the same Cindy Williams that starred on Laverne and Shirley as the blue-eyed beauty, Shirley.

I mustered the courage to approach the ladies. I told Cindy Williams that she inspired me. I also apologized for eves dropping. They laughed about the eves dropping incident and introduced themselves. The other lady was also working in the film industry - her name is Marla. They asked me about what I was doing now. I mentioned that I'm a ghostwriter for many clients.

Two years before, I graduated from UCSB as a film & media major. Within 30 seconds of talking about film, Cindy Williams asked for my business card. I knew that the business card issue was going to come up. The right spot and wrong time theme scrambled through my mind again. I told her that I didn't have one with me a time and that I had left it at home. This was like being at a party.

At parties, some people say or do the wrong thing and deflate the energy. I felt like one of these people that deflated the conversation. You could see it in Cindy's eyes. She said that if she and others opened a studio, they would consider hiring someone like me. I thought about it for a second.

Indeed, I was in the right spot and could make this the right moment. Cindy had a book in her purse. I asked if I could write down my information. Again, I made another rookie mistake. I wrote down my name and e-mail address. I left out my phone number, the most important piece of information.

Marla was also nice as well. She had a nice solitaire diamond ring on her finger. These women were extremely friendly and respectful. They were really easy to talk to. I never felt like I was judged as a smaller person. Cindy and Marla had to leave. They shook my hand, wished me luck, and really added hope to my life. I congratulated Marla on her engagement and wished her luck on her future wedding. Cindy and Marla both looked at me and then at each other. Marla mentioned that I was a real good listener. They thanked me and told me to continue on with my writing goals. Cindy and Marla had a busy day to look forward to; they were living my dream.

Was it possible that the right spot at the wrong time would occur for the third time in a night? I left the restaurant through the back entrance, beating myself about the business card mistake. Cindy and Marla were walking outside; they dispersed and went off to their vehicles. Cindy was driving a nice white car. I can't remember the make, but it was nice.

I approached Cindy and started to talk about the writing again. Marla drove up and made sure Cindy was okay to drive. Cindy told me that I should write for the new media. She said that writing commercials opened up opportunities for writers. I had a chance to fix the phone number mistake, but forgot to mention it again. I don’t know what my problem was; maybe I had a case of celebritistis. Cindy had to leave. She was an awesome person.

Cindy drove by, honked at me, and cheeringly talked out A man quickly moved out of the way, thinking he was being warned about standing in front of her car. Cindy looked extremely happy, so energetic, and full of life. She was real genuine. There was nothing fake about her at all. I smiled and thanked her for the kindness.

While driving off and away from Tony Roma's parking lot, the right spot at the wrong time theme played in my head. I didn't have a business card, I didn't write down my phone number down, and didn't fix my mistakes outside.

Whenever you want something as much as I want to be a writer, make sure you're always prepared. Carry business cards, have portfolio samples, and just be ready to discuss your skills and goals. Be positive about your chances and don't allow negativity to cloud your judgment. Always think about being in the right place at the right time.

The $250 Decision - Tires, Smog Check, and Smog Extension

Why do we have to make decisions? Every person has to make decisions. They have to make decisions that involve education, financial, relationships, and other aspects of life.

A few weeks ago, I had to make a decision regarding a smog, tires, and a registration extension. I only had $250 to work with.

Before I left my apartment, I knew that I only had $250 to spend. The smog shop opened at 8am. The first decision, the most important one, was to get a smog.

My registration expired on March 13. Since it was June, my tags were 3 months overdue. I paid the registration fees before the deadline to avoid any penalties.

Due to the engine light, the car was unable to pass smog. The smog inspection requires a vehicle to pass the visual inspection.

The engine light was causing me major problems. What decision making was required to resolve this matter?

Well, first of all, I had to fail the smog. I knew that the car wouldn't pass. Early in the morning, I found a smog coupon that took $20 off the smog.

Since I didn't pass the smog, I didn't have to pay for the smog certificate. The total cost for the smog was $38.50. I had $211.50 left.

I raced over to DMV. It was very slow there. After sitting for only 3 minutes, my number was called. I asked for a 60 day extension. The clerk denied my request for an extension.

California changed their smog policy; they only offered a 60 day extension from the expiration date. One problem...

My registration was expired for the past 3 months. Now I still had $211.50 to worth with.

Since I couldn't get an extension, I decided to visit the tire shop. My back left tire was a complete disaster.

Six weeks before, I hit a pothole. The impact tore the inner part of the back tire apart. Due to slash in the inner side of the tire, the Walmart technician was unable to fix the tire. He told me to buy a tire repair kit that had some liquorish looking rubber in it.

The tire was repaired for only $7. That $7 was a good decision since I was unable to afford a new tire, which Walmart didn't carry in stock because of Acura's strict tire specifications.

I still had $211.50 to work with, but wasted the $38.50 to fail the smog. I originally thought that I was able to get the $50 extension for two months.

The tire shop was slow. Usually it was busy there, but everyone was at work. The technician wanted to charge $260 for two tires. I only had $211.50. I decided that I could only afford one tire.

Since I was driving home, I really needed to replace the damaged tire. The other back tire would have to wait.

I remembered the last time when I bought two tires. The technician only charged $150.

The technician looked in the computer and noticed that I had a tire certificate. While I hoped for two tires, but was fine with one tire, the technician was able to work out a deal because of the tire warranty. I only had to pay $150 for two tires.

Luckily, I purchased the tire warranty. Now I was able to drive to my parent's home with four matching tires. Most importantly, the drive would be a safe one.

I had $61.50 left. My decision making was directed toward making sure that I took care of the legal issues before I fixed the safety ones. I used the remaining $61.50 to pay my utility bills and to fill up the gas tank.

Even though I was broke afterward, I now had a failed smog form and two new back tires that matched the front tires. In the past, I always shopped for price. Many times, I never had the same brand of tires. Now I had four matching tires.

At the beginning, I had $250 to spend. I made good use of the money. If I had to pay $50 for the registration extension, there would be no way I could afford the two back tires.

I needed new back tires more than anything, but I also wanted to take care of the smog issue, so the car could be legal.

Though we never get everything we want out of life, in this case, I was able to accomplish half of the goals I set out to resolve beforehand.

I wanted the smog issue to be resolved, but that decision was out of my hands due to the new California Smog policy changes.

Mission accomplished: the $250 was well spent using good decision making.

The Wedding Cake Disaster at Las Vegas's The Grill at Valentino

On a Friday afternoon, I sat in the break room. I wanted to buy a wedding present that was memorable. Another coworker was eating a salad, which looked plain to a person that enjoyed meat.

"What do you think I should get my brother and his wife?" I said. The coworker suggested money or other typical things that people tend to buy for wedding presents. I wanted to be different.

When I talked to my brother, he never discussed or even mentioned anything regarding a wedding cake. He started to get anxious about getting married. This was the first time that he left the only area that he has ever known, the place that he called home.

I talked with my fiance about the wedding cake. She thought it was a good idea to order the wedding cake. The plan was to have the wedding reception at The Grill at Valentino - a restaurant inside the Venetian Hotel. We thought it was would best to pick up the wedding cake drop it off at restaurant.

My brother and his soon-to-be wife arranged the small wedding reception there. Since they were already hotels guests at the Venetian Hotel, the decision was a good choice for everyone.

I was happy about giving a wedding cake as the wedding gift. There is a nice bakery in Las Vegas that makes popular wedding cakes. It was featured on one of the Food Network channels. We decided that a wedding cake from that location would make an excellent wedding gift.

After I had talked to a few coworkers in the break room, I made the call to order the cake. The wedding cake was a one-layer tier wedding cake. It had elaborate designs, nice decorations, and a satin band which wrapped around the cake base. Have you ever watched one of those lavish weddings? I'm sure that many people have watched and even attended a nice weddings.

A tier represents one single layer to a wedding cake. Traditionally, the bride and groom are supposed to cut the wedding cake in front of their wedding guests. The cake was finally ordered. As a college student, I was financially limited. Though the wedding cake cost a small fortune, it was worth the occasion.

The journey to make it to the wedding was a disaster. After radiator hose exploded in the Mojave Desert, it took an entire afternoon to make it to Las Vegas. In the process, I almost missed the wedding. Thankfully, we delivered the wedding cake to The Grill at Valentino in the Venetian Hotel.

The manager stored the wedding cake. He knew that it was my brother's wedding reception. The manager noted that there would be a per plate fee, which I agreed upon. We celebrated the wedding and enjoyed the atmosphere. Everyone talked, joked and had a fancy dinner. The steaks didn't taste as good as advertised, but the presentation was surely nice.

I walked up to the manager and told him that I was ready for wedding cake. The manager told the server about the wedding cake. I was excited about the fact that we made it to the wedding. and everything seemed to be working out.

My back faced in the opposite direction. I didn't see my brother and his wife's reaction. The only thing I could concentrate on was how the guests - that faced me - responded; they each had an eerie look. They didn't want to tell me what they think had happened. What could be so bad?

Eight servers walked out with separate dishes that had small pieces of cake on it. Each plate was buried in puree and looked as if I had asked the server to order dessert for everyone on the bride and groom's bill. I was so infuriated that it ruined what was supposed to be a special moment.

After going through a disaster to make it to the wedding, I thought that surprising my brother and his wife with a wedding cake would make up for the struggle. I was ready to take pictures. The wedding cake was now a memory that faded away. Nobody besides my fiance saw the wedding cake.

Because the restaurant was worried about charging per plate fee, they took it upon themselves to destroy a special moment that could never be replaced.

I sent an e-mail to the restaurant regarding the situation. A female representative named Kristin Pollock called and asked me what she could do to fix the situation. I told her that it was hard to replace the moment. I gave them a chance; she offered to order another cake to deliver.

I didn't think it was fair that the manager failed to communicate with the staff about the wedding cake. The cake was not like any other cake. It was obvious that it was a wedding cake that should have been cut by the bride and groom.

Kristin never returned any of my calls or e-mails regarding the cake. I communicated to the restaurant that I was a freelance writer. While I was busy taking on other writing projects the past few years, I decided to take the time to write a short story about the experience.

The Grill at Valentino managed to ruin the traditional bride and groom wedding cake cutting moment. They buried the cake with so much puree that you couldn't see the wedding cake. The server had the nerve to walk out with a box that had the remaining pieces of the butchered wedding cake. I tried to hold back my anger due to the fact that it was a wedding reception.

Thank you The Grill at Valentino for making my brother's wedding reception a disaster. I sure hope you take the time to communicate next time. People don't forget things that easily, especially when you ignore the situation and ruined a once in a lifetime moment for a married couple.

On April 7th, 2007, The Grill at Valentino restaurant staff - inside the Venetian Hotel & Suites - sliced up a wedding cake and never tried to fix the moment. They were too worried about losing money on the per plate fee. The restaurant disregarded the importance of the traditional bride and groom wedding cake cutting moment.

Hopefully this wedding cake disaster never happens to another couple again. Cutting the wedding cake without first asking the table was an act of rudeness. The wedding cake disaster at Las Vegas's The Grill at Valentino in the Venetian Hotel & Suites ruined a special moment that can never be replaced.

Imagine how happy my brother and his wife could have been if they were able to cut a wedding cake that was made specifically for them. Maybe that caused their string of bad luck. I'm glad that I had some time out of my busy schedule to write the article.

My nephews first steps

The Magic Of Technology

Andrew is going to have a party to celebrate his first birthday.

In the 90's, we didn't have access to sending videos and music across the Internet. While technology was available, the ability to send large files was not plausible.

My little nephew took his first steps a few weeks before his 1st birthday. I was able to download this video from my e-mail.

During the mid 70's, film cameras were far too expensive to purchase. There was no way that I could watch my first steps on video. Watch my nephew's first steps.

Excuse his messy haircut. My brother wanted to trim his hair and didn't change the blade setting. Though his hair looks like a mess, it will grow back again.

2012

The media is trying to capitalize on the fear of 2012. On December 21, 2012, scientists fear that all the planets within our galaxy - the Milky Way - will align. The last time that this event occurred was 700,000 years ago. Should we fear the end of the world in 2012?

The equinox is supposed to attract a huge amount of energy, causing many natural disasters across the globe. Other prophets warned that a comet would hit the Earth. What will happen in 2012?

Honestly, the same thing that happened on December 31, 1999 will occur on Dec 31, 2011, the next day - January 1, 2000 and January 1, 2013. We can't be too gullible about life.

The media likes to play off the fears of other people. The Mayan Calendar is supposed to hint at the end of the world. What proof is there that the world will end?

Did the Mayan and the Egyptian know about an Alien technology or were they warned about the future? The Egyptian Pyramids are far too advanced - in that time frame. Is there a predestined blueprint to Earth?

The new Hollywood film 2012 will build further interest about the catastrophic effects of 2012. There is no ideal way to actually find about 2012. We just have to wait and see.

Until then, try to live life without stressing about the end of the world.

Accused of File Sharing at College

Five years ago, I was a film student at De Anza College. I used my Gateway laptop in the film computer room. Many of the students used to connect their laptop to the ports to check their e-mail accounts and to surf on the Internet. I decided to do the same exact thing.

Thirty minutes before my 16mm Advanced Film course, a San Jose police officer told me to step aside from the computer and leave the room. He questioned me outside of the room. Students passed by and were staring at me. I had no clue what was going on.

The police officer entered the room. He told me to follow him and to sit down. I was instructed not to touch my computer.

Outside of the room, an IT technical supervisor talked with the police officer. A few students asked me what was going on. At that exact moment, I was still lost for words.  One student told me to make sure they didn't take my computer. It was best to allow the police officer to take the hard drive.

The police officer took a report. He questioned me about why I plugged in my computer and if i was conducting illegal activity. I told him that I was checking my e-mails because I was in a film group. My class was currently in session.

The police officer wrote down the serial numbers to my computer. He told me that the IT technical supervisor said I was trying to release a virus into their system and that I was also file sharing, which were false claims. The IT could've walked up to me and asked me to disconnect.

I felt like one of those drivers that was pulled over for speeding. The slowest car always seems to receive the ticket while others coast by without experiencing any problems.

Essentially, the police officer suggested that I should avoid connecting to the college's network system again. He told me that I may be contacted by the Dean about the situation. Though, I was contacted about the incident.

What did I learn from this situation? I should never connect to another network system. People should buy their own Internet USB stick and avoid borrowing other connections. In a span of 6 months, I was accused of stealing my own car and of file sharing and downloading a virus.

Vehicle Theft - A Learning Lesson

Five years ago, my Acura Integra was stolen in San Jose. The car was stolen on late Thursday evening and found in Stockton late Saturday evening. When I first visited the car a few days later, it was stripped clean. The bumpers, rear lights, stereo, speakers, tire & rims, and many other parts were taken.

Diablo Auto Body - Stockton - restored the car back to its pre-stolen status. The shop experienced some complications with fully repairing the car due to locating after-market parts. the only part that had to be purchased from the dealership was the Acura Integra LS SE stock rims. The rims cost around $2500. After everything was said and done, the repairs cost $11,500.

My insurance agent was trying to rip me off on the rims. He assumed that I had junky stock rims and donuts on the car. Essentially, the car jackers placed those rims & tires on the vehicle. They ditched the vehicle near an old abandoned warehouse. Please take a picture of your car. You never know when you'll be in the same situation. Don't allow a insurance company to take advantage of you.

After the car was recovered and placed in a storage facility, it looked as if it would never be in proper working order again. I could remember the first day I looked over the car. It was completely shocking to see a car stripped down to the bare bones, especially one that you owned. I took pictures of the car. I removed what possessions were left behind, which there not many, besides a couple of college books.

A few months later, Diablo restored the car; they replaced everything. Since I was excited about the car, I forgot to check to see if everything was functioning. When I drove the vehicle home, I decided that it was wise to buy an alarm. I noticed that I was missing a few items in the interior of the car. The sun visors and trunk items were missing. The CD player didn't work.

While driving at the college, I was almost hit by a BMW - the car seemed to keep backing up to the point where it looked as if were trying to intentionally hit me. I tried to honk at the car, but the horn didn't work. I knew at that moment, I didn't have a second to waste.

I tried to warn the driver. He continued to back up. I must have reversed the car for 40 feet. Since I was a college students, the campus police would have believed the BMW driver over me.

Later that night, I drove home. I found out that the high beams didn't work as well. Just a recap of what didn't work: missing sun visors and trunk pieces, CD issues, horn and high beams didn't work. I saved the best for last.

After taking a late night class at the college, I drove home. The drive home usually take around 2 ours - 100 miles. At the midpoint, I decided to pull off the road. I was extremely tired. It is a known fact that drivers that are sleepy can be just as dangerous as drunk drivers.

Pleasanton was one of those nice cities I could trust. You have to pay attention to your surroundings. Don't take any chances with parking in bad areas. I pulled into an empty parking lot near a restaurant.  After sleeping for a few hours, I heard a voice tell me to put my hands up. I thought I was dreaming at the time.

In the rearview mirror, 3 police vehicles covered me from distance. The officers had guns pointed on the vehicle. I put my hands up n the air. The voice instructed me to remove the car key from the ignition with my right hand and to pass it over to the left hand.

Once the key was in the left hand, I was told to drop it out of the window. I was instructed to open the door with my left hand, slowly step out of the car, and walk backwards. During this entire time, I had to keep my hands up in the air.

After I reached the midpoint, I was instructed to drop to my knees. Restaurant customers were told to stay back as they hinted that I was dangerous. The voice told me to cross my legs and to put keep my hands behind me. A police officer slowly approached and cuffed me. I told him that this was the first time that I was cuffed for anything. He told me to stand and started to walk me over to the police vehicle.

At that exact moment, I immediately caught onto what the police thought I did - steal my own car. I told them that the car was recently stolen. I instructed the officer to look at the registration and the auto repair list in the glove compartment.

What I discovered was that my car turned up stolen on the police computer system. I was never told that I should make sure I turned in the old plates. Whenever a car is stolen, the old plates are useless. You have to get new ones.

The police officer removed the old plates. He suggested that I drive without them until I visited DMV.  He noted that the vehicle flashed "stolen." It was his job to make sure he acted right away to diffuse the situation.

A few days later, I was pulled over again. I didn't experience the same problems because the plates were removed. The officer wrote down my vin # to look up the car. Everything turned out good. I was instructed to make sure I visited DMV to clear up the matter.

After a month, I had to drop off the car to be repaired again. The shop disconnected some wires, which completely ruined the horn. The horn sounded as if I were trying to attract ducks. The high beams still don't work to this day. The door opened after hitting bumps, which I had fixed at a mechanic shop. Anytime you experience car theft, please makes sure that you change your plates.

Don't try to make things easier for the insurance company. I thought that I should be nice and save the insurance company on towing costs. I could had the car towed towed 130 miles to a nearby shop. Instead, I had to drive back and forth, which cost me time and money.

Looking back, I'm glad that I accepted the car back. You have an option; the car insurance company could pay off what the repairs would have cost. Since I needed a commuter car, I thought it was wise to proceed forward with the repairs.

Eight months after the theft, my engine fell apart. I didn't drive the car for one year. The repairs ended up costing me $1710. To this day, I still can't get a smog because the engine light refuses to shut off.

Next time around - hope not - I will be more better prepared to handle the situation. Make sure you keep a list of what you have in your car. Take pictures of the vehicle beforehand. Don't have the car worked on in another city.

Due to traveling, you want to be close to the auto shop to take care of any problems that may surface in the future. Hopefully you don't have the same luck as me. Drive safely and be alert about your surroundings.

My Space cuts 30% staff

My Space just reduced their workforce by 30%. What is the world coming to when My Space is unable to retain their staff?

Advertisers are trying to adopt more cost efficient practices. Because of advertisers, Google, My Space, and Face Book made a fortune. My Space is not enjoying the same advertising revenue as it once did. Though they never stated that, I'm sure that advertisers are being frugal.

Cutting 30% of the total company workforce shows that Internet companies are experiencing the same issues as other businesses. What should My Space do to rediscover their image? My Space has claimed they want to start at the beginning; they plan to use startup practices to attract business once again.

My Space needs to hire on a team to figure out what caused their problems. Leadership is one of the most important practices in any working environment. A leader must recapture the vision.

My Space's original goal was to create a social networking site for music. They accidentally fell into the networking business. Many of the users are not making money for My Space because they focus on socializing.

My Space must attract older adults that need products. They have to conduct research to figure out what their target population is and what they can do to attract them.

Marketing their company will increase traffic and attract more advertisers. Every company goes through a rough patch. My Space will make it through the economic downturn.

California Smog Policy

California recently changed their vehicle smog policy. In the past, DMW would offer extensions. Now they only allow a 60 day extension from the expiration date. There is also a catch to the extension. DMW charges $50 for a two month extension. What happens after the 60 day extension passes? Well, that is what I'm currently experiencing at this exact moment.

Each morning, I have to visit DMW to get a 1 day pass. DMW is going to be a morning ritual until I find a way to fix the catalytic converter - the cost is $600-700. Some days I have to take chances due to driving with a March 2009 sticker. I paid the vehicle registration fees on time, but have can't receive the new sticker until I pass the smog. What makes it worse is the fact that the car engine light is the main reason I can't pass the smog.

Though my car passes on all air pollution tests, the engine light causes me to fail the visual inspection. In changing the smog policy, I have to worry about whether I will receive a registration ticket. After 6 months, the authorities have a right to tow your vehicle. Hopefully I can resolve the matter before then. I have another vehicle that is also causing me smog issues.

In the past six months, my Honda has been parked. The sticker expired September 2008. I paid the fees on time, but the engine light also kept me from getting a smog. Since car was parked, the back tire lost air. The battery went dead. In order to pass the smog, the car will need one of those expensive tune-ups. Between the two vehicles, I have my hands full.

The main reason I can't sell the car is because I'm still paying on them. I am required to have full coverage insurance with a $500 deductible on each vehicle. Imagine paying $800 for insurance on a car that you haven't driven in almost a year.

When my Acura Integra was first stolen, the engine fell apart. The car wasn't driven for over a year. I had to pay full coverage insurance on the vehicle. California's smog policy is forcing me to drive on the edge. The only other way to get a smog is to file for state assistance, which helps residents in need of help. Type California Smog Assistance in Google.

California has various program; they have one that allows a person to donate a car for $1000. This assistance is for vehicles that are not worth fixing. The State will only allow a resident to  use this program 2 times per year. It really depends on how much funding is available.

If you have a smog problem, try to reverse the policy. Many residents are struggling to pass a smog and don't have the financial assistance to conduct repairs.

In a few months, going to DMW every single day will be played out like a pair of bell bottoms. California's smog policy has made it tough for people that don't have passing vehicles, especially for those families that are struggling to make a living.

The Hope Credit

To all parents and students; make sure you take advantage of the Hope Credit for undergraduates.

When you file your federal income tax, make sure to tell the tax preparer that you want to use the Hope Credit. You're permitted to use it twice as an undergraduate. I believe the Hope Credit is now at $2000 credits

Fill out the education form; place your tuition and other qualified expenses in the boxes. If you are due a $2000 refund, you will receive an additional $2000 - $4000 total. The same applies for owing. If you owe $2000, then you won't owe anything.

After using the Hope Credit, you still can use the Lifetime Learning credits, which accounts for 20% of tuition. Also, keep in mind, make sure you also include qualified interest for student loans.

Please take advantage of this great opportunity. Ask your local tax adviser, tax preparer, or conduct research on the Internet.

The Disney Television Writing Fellowship

The deadline for the Disney Television Writing Fellowship is quickly approaching. All packages must be postmarked before July 1, 2009.

For the past 3 years, I wanted to submit a package to the Disney Television Writing Fellowship program. I know that I have what it takes to make it as a finalist. Why do I continue to wait for something that I worked half of my life to secure - an opportunity to work in film and television?

I will submit a package for the 2009 submission. I plan on writing a spec script to HBO's In Treatment. I have taken on numerous psychology assignments. I understand how the DSM-IV manual works.

When I start the screenplay, I will focus on a patient that is unable to accept their condition. There are many ways to take write the episode.

If I don't make it as a finalist, I will not lose confidence in my ability to become a writer. In the past 5 years, I was able to accept criticism and to improve deadlines. Those are two areas that many writers struggle with. Why take a chance to ruin your dream?

If you work hard for something, make sure you're ready. You have to fix all the areas that may cause future problems. Be direct, confident, accept criticism, make deadlines, beat writer's block, and what other challenges hold you back from succeeding.

Once I submit the package, I will keep everyone posted about the status. Rub that rabbit's foot for me.

Identity Theft - A stolen wallet started the problems

Identity theft affects millions of people and costs America billions of dollars each year.

Six years ago, I was working a morning shift at a restaurant. Before my shift started, I put my wallet in the top compartment of my backpack. The backpack was then placed near the break table, next to the back dining area. I never thought that one wallet would cause me so many detrimental problems.

After I finished a day shift, I searched for my wallet. The wallet was nowhere to be found. Could I have possibly left my wallet at home? What I found out later was that a customer had taken the wallet? I only discovered this after I received a dozen calls regarding several credit charges.

The credit card charges were just the start of the problem. What I learned later is that you should always report a stolen wallet immediately. Why should you do this? Any one person can use your identification and credit cards to rent vehicles, hotels, and to make deals with other entities. I reported the wallet stolen on the very next day.

Due to unlawful activity - one that authorities thought I was part of - a detective visited my place of residence. The detective shared with my landlord about the illegal activity. He asked whether I was the type of person that would vandalize and steal property in a Marriot's Hotel.

In using my military I.D. card, the perpetrator posed as a pilot; he was able to build trust with people in result of the Iraq War. He recruited a crew of friends that wiped out the hotel room: the dressers, lamps, mattress, and everything else that wasn't attached to the ground was taken out and loaded into a van.

The detective suggested that I orchestrated the hotel heist. My landlord told him that I was an honest person and would never do anything illegal. While working a shift at the restaurant, the detective asked to speak to me regarding the hotel and a few other issues.

During the meeting, the detective told me about the slew of crimes - hotel ordeal, a stolen trailer and hitch, counterfeit checks, and other issues. He showed me a copy of my identification and credit cards, ones that were used for the illegal activity.

A few nights later, I received multiple messages from other identity theft victims. I decided to call one of the victims – an older man - to set up a meeting. Once my college class let out for the night, I went directly home to meet the old man. The old man was obviously a fan of the San Francisco 49ers. He was wearing one of those vintage jackets from the early 80’s.

The old man and I talked about the main problem in hand. How was the perpetrator able to use my identification to steal the old man’s trailer hitch? This man – the perpetrator - posed as an Air Force pilot to build a relationship with each one of the victims. Indeed, the man was a con artist that was out to ruin my name.

The old man mentioned that the wannabe pilot was a few inches taller than me. He managed to retain a hitch part that the perpetrator left behind. A few minutes later, the doorbell rang. The city police requested that I leave with them to meet a female victim, one that was ready to identify me as the man that ripped off her trailer. They showed me a copy of my two ID cards on a piece of white paper.

The old man noted that I was not the man that was conning all of these people. He described the man and shared his experienced. I also showed the police a copy of the stolen wallet report. If I hadn’t called the old man and filed a report, I would be going down for these crimes.

After that moment, the slew of crimes continued on. The detective consulted me about counterfeit checks, stolen rental cars, and other illegal activity. He advised to obtain a credit report. Eventually, the criminal activity slowed down.

A few weeks later, the detective called and noted that he arrested the perpetrator. Video surveillance cameras captured the criminal a few weeks back: the first day my wallet was stolen.

Later, I received a notice from the court. They invited me to watch the trial, the one that was going to sentence the con artist to 750 days in prison. I decided against attending the trial. Meeting an impersonator face-to-face was not wise due to the short jail sentence.

What I learned from this matter is the danger of personal information. Never take any chances. Immediately report any stolen possessions, especially wallets or purses. Make sure you notify the credit bureaus. Keep a log that records relevant times and events relating to the theft.

Lastly, consumers that have maxed out credit card accounts are still at risk for identity theft. Credit card companies still allow charges go through on maxed out accounts. In retrospect, this story demonstrates how a stolen wallet can cause severe legal issues.

Dreaming: The Meaning of the Neverending Examination

Multiple instructors monitored the large forum like a military installation. The room was filled with many eager students that were ready to get the test over and done with. Though, the dream was somewhat vague, the main focus channeled on the examination.

At the time of the dream, I couldn't figure out why I was experiencing so much difficulty completing to the examination. The neverending examination seemed to last forever. As time was quickly winding down, I was stuck on page 1. The examination was a dozen pages long. I kept changing answers; no one answer seemed to fit.

I remembered the time expiring. Due to the fact that this was a final examination, my future hanged in the balance. I was stressing out in trying to figure out how to gain access to more time. The content was hard to dcciper and I stilled had a reasonably hard time The instructor started to argue with me. I refused to be ridiculed in front of the entire class. I fought back.

Essentially, I compared the element of time to something regarding the process of creating an introduction. There was no real connection with an introduction and time, but I given a slight extension for showing directness and for making an argument. Another student asked whether they could have additional time to complete the examination, but she elected to turn down him and each and every other student that requested an extension.

The main them that I noticed about the dream was about my inability to complete the examination and the high level of stress the processes created in doing so, knowing that my grade depended on the completing the final examination.

Dreaming about an examination usually refers to relevants concerning failure. An examination can also symbolize that a person is being tested too often in trying to meet the demands and expectations of family, friends, and society in general.

In the dream, I refused to give up and I also felt a sense of urgency to complete the examination. My stress increased as the time continued to tick away. The time sensitive concern targeted my concerns of reaching a goal in an given timeframe. Now I know that I'm thinking too much about accomplishing my dream of being a film writer that it's putting alot of pressure on me. Family, friends, and other people don't see why I keep trying for something that is not likely to happen, instead they belief it is time to abandon the 15 year goal to live an average life.

The examination represented the goal itself while the time refered to my concern about reaching the goal because of outside influences that are pressuring me to choose between more realistic goals. The instructor conflict demonstrated that others control whether I succeed or not. The "others" refer to the film industry executives. When I refused to give up that responded to my drive and motivaton to become successful.

After failing to win a recent screenwriting contest, I started to question my writing talents. My mother recently suggested that I look for another line of work because I have too much bad luck. In my relationship, she doesn't see the immediate results and fail to look at the long-term achievements. Last week I had a dream about a clogged up toilet that started to flood the entire room. Dreaming about a toilet being clogged up refers to expressing emotions.

Recently, I have been having more dreams that are confronting the pressures that I feel with excessive freelance writing work and my inability to accomplish my film writing dream. I feel that I'm battling time, lack of support, and other conflict that is holding me back from becoming a film writer. We'll see what dreams follow thereafter. The neverending examination is like my neverending writing dream that seems to lose luster as time continues press on. Hopefully I find that big break soon. Pay attention to your dreams. They all have meanings and can help to be a better person.
