April 22 is Earth Day. Happy Earth Day! What is Earth Day? Earth Day is recognized as a special day to treat the environment with care. It is a day to recognize the Earth as a a precious home, our most vital resource to survival.
According to Redmond (2010), Earth Day was first honored in San Francisco on April 22, 1970. Despite previous environment disasters, the Santa Barbara oil spill the previous year (1969) spawned a dire need to preserve Earth's environment.
The recent BP oil spill further increased environmental awareness, showing us that wildlife and natural resources so precious to the Earth could experience such trauma. Therefore, April 22 of every year thereafter is viewed as a day to thank the Earth for our survival.
Do something nice to thank Earth for our natural resources to survive. As pollution continues to paralyze the world, the greater the chance our environment will change. Respect the environment by taking part in environmental activities to honor Earth Day.
Happy Earth Day 2013!
