The Disney Television Writing Fellowship

The deadline for the Disney Television Writing Fellowship is quickly approaching. All packages must be postmarked before July 1, 2009.

For the past 3 years, I wanted to submit a package to the Disney Television Writing Fellowship program. I know that I have what it takes to make it as a finalist. Why do I continue to wait for something that I worked half of my life to secure - an opportunity to work in film and television?

I will submit a package for the 2009 submission. I plan on writing a spec script to HBO's In Treatment. I have taken on numerous psychology assignments. I understand how the DSM-IV manual works.

When I start the screenplay, I will focus on a patient that is unable to accept their condition. There are many ways to take write the episode.

If I don't make it as a finalist, I will not lose confidence in my ability to become a writer. In the past 5 years, I was able to accept criticism and to improve deadlines. Those are two areas that many writers struggle with. Why take a chance to ruin your dream?

If you work hard for something, make sure you're ready. You have to fix all the areas that may cause future problems. Be direct, confident, accept criticism, make deadlines, beat writer's block, and what other challenges hold you back from succeeding.

Once I submit the package, I will keep everyone posted about the status. Rub that rabbit's foot for me.

  1. two quick thoughts, though sorry to come so late to the party: first, if you're only beginning your spec, you should understand you're at a disadvantage. many specs submitted have been worked on all year (if not for multiple years - and i know people who have). don't put too much pressure on being a finalist - it's only about 20 of 2000 submissions, so the top one or two percent at best. second, in treatment isn't a popular program - readers will be biased if they are unfamiliar with the show. when choosing a spec, make sure it's accessible to readers.
